The number of visitors to Guyana during the Carifesta X period in Guyana is currently being assessed, but according to Tourism Minister Manniram Prashad, preliminary figures indicate that it has surpassed that of Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2007.
He noted that during the Carifesta X period, mechanisms were put in place to identify first time visitors, members of the Diaspora as well as persons returning to Guyana.
Some 29 countries participated in the 100 events at the tenth Caribbean Festival of Arts held from August 22 to 31. Many of the events were attended by hundreds, sometimes thousands of patrons, particularly the Super Concerts and the activities at the Sophia Exhibition Centre.
The curtains closed for Carifesta X on Sunday last with a splash of colours and rhythms at the National Stadium.
More than half a million persons attended events held across Guyana over the ten-day period. This was revealed by President Bharrat Jagdeo at the closing ceremony. These figures were provided by the Carifesta Secretariat.
One indicative measure of the presence of visitors in the country was the occupancy rates at hotels in and around the city.
A mini survey conducted by this newspaper just days before the opening ceremony saw several of the more notable hotels booked by more than 60 per cent with reservations taking them to at least 90 per cent occupancy rates with some reporting 100 per cent occupancy.
Among the hotels surveyed were Bransville, Buddy’s International, Cara Suites and Zoom Inn.
The Festival had returned to Guyana after a 36-year hiatus and was held with minor glitches despite the challenging one-year period for preparations.
Other countries are afforded two years but Guyana undertook the task after The Bahamas pulled out of hosting the event.
