Police at Lethem have detained a postal employee who reportedly admitted to stealing close to $100,000 of money transfers to the Lethem Post Office.
Kaieteur News understands that the employee, a 22-year-old clerk, admitted to stealing the cash over a period of time. According to a source, when the monies are transferred to Lethem, the clerk would change the name of the recipient and then organize for an accomplice to uplift the cash.
The alleged fraud came to light following several complaints from persons at Lethem who reported that they were not receiving monies sent although there are records to prove their claims.
The post mistress at Lethem subsequently launched an investigation that led to the clerk.
He was taken into custody yesterday.
