In scorching heat at the Everest ground yesterday, West Indies under-19 batsman Rajendra Chandrika hit an accomplished unbeaten 71 to steer Steven Jacobs’ X1 to an emphatic six-wicket victory against Travis Dowlin’s X1 in the first of three trial matches to select the Demerara team for the El Dorado senior Inter-County 50-overs cricket competition.
The right-handed Chandrika who celebrated his 19th birthday last month hit two fours and a six on a heavy outfield as Jacob’s X1 reached 158-4 in 37 overs replying to the 157 all out in 50 overs made by Dowlin’s X1.
Dowlin’s X1 were in early trouble at 19-2 after Chris Barnwell (8) was run out and Dion Carew removed Imran Hassan (4).
Carew, who finished with 2-18 from five overs, then bowled Avinash Sookdeo for a duck at 28-3 before Harrynarine Hera was run out for 16 as Dowlin’s X1 slipped to 46-4.
Orin Forde (22) and Ravi Sarwan (17) tried to repair the damage before they were both removed by West Indies under-19 Vice-Captain Jacobs who took 2-25 from 10 overs of off-spin on a slow track.
Surajpaul Deosarran who finished unbeaten on 28 and Zaheer Mohamed who was last out for 15 added 31 for the 10th wicket with intelligent batting and running between the wickets as the spinners kept a tight reign on the batsmen.
Left-arm spinner Sauid Drepaul was also among the wickets with 2-29 from 10 overs for Jacobs’ X1 who lost Shemroy Barrington (5) to Deosarran to leave his team on 25-1.
Rawle Browne (6) then pulled a high full toss from off-spinner Orin Forde to short fine-leg at 50-2 while left-arm spinner Clinton Collins got rid of Jacobs for 25 at 86-3.
Former national youth batsman Krishna Deosarran was caught and bowled by Guyana under-19 left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun for 33 but the compact Chandrika batted with consummate ease and was 29 short of an attractive ton when victory was achieved with 13 overs to spare.
The second trial match is fixed for today at the same venue and play is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs.
