STILL CRAZY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS?
ESSAYS IN HONOUR OF SIR RAMON GASKIN
ON HIS 67TH BIRTHDAY Edited by Evan Persaud (UG Press 2008)
This is an impressive festschrift for one of Guyana’s great intellectuals; Ramon ‘Rambo’ Gaskin. For nearly seventy years now he has astonished, delighted and frustrated those who come into contact with his brain. Sometimes all at the same time.
Who can forget ‘Rambo’ in full flow as he expounds on the everlasting virtues of Marxism-Leninism bouncing up and down like a jitterbug. Face getting redder and redder. It is a sight to behold. Intellectual diarrhea!!
Ramon is one of finest minds left in Guyana. Bill finds ‘Rambo’ an acquired taste. They have their ups and downs. Mainly ups. He is always but always entertaining. Always challenging. Now his close colleague (and TV quizmaster) Evan Persaud has pulled together essays in appreciation of Ramon on his bird–day (as you say in Guyana).
Most surprising contribution comes from President Bharrat Jagdeo on ‘What I learned from Rambo when we shared a desk at the Ministry of Finance’. They may seem like chalk and cheese but there was an osmosis between them, both were Russian trained.
Gaskin’s former Dean at Lumumba University, Nikita Krupskya, details the extraordinary attack ‘Rambosky ’ made on him – in Russian – at the graduation ceremony. It had never happened before or since. Russia is inscribed in Ramon’s heart, cut him and you will find USSR in his DNA. If Vladimir Ilyich could have contributed to this volume, surely he would have praised this master Marxist?
Patrick Yarde offers a new insight into ‘Rambo – the Trade Unionist’ about his, ultimately unsuccessful attempts to transform the GPSU some years ago. Christopher Ram writes on Gaskin and his mastery of the detail of public accounts. These two are the only ones who do understand them. Then, another surprise. Brian “BK’ Tiwari and his chapter on “Rambo’s Contribution to the development of Commercial Law in Guyana’ based on working very closely with him. Finally, Bert Wilkinson on Associated Press on Rambo the Man and his reputation for controversy and more.
“Still Crazy” is a great book. Gaskin should be thankful to have a Boswell as thorough as Evan Persaud.
Happy Birthday Rambo! Many more..
