Zoom Airlines’ bankruptcy caught Guyana by surprise

The airlines industry in Guyana did not foresee the bankruptcy decision by Transatlantic Airline Zoom and as such were caught off guard and surprised when the company made the decision.
As such a number of passengers were left stranded in Guyana forcing Constellation Tours, the airline which chartered the flights to Guyana, to make arrangements to have the passengers to return to their destinations.
Yesterday, Minister of Tourism, Manniram Prashad, told the media that Constellation Tours did not abandon their passengers but instead made arrangements for them to leave the country.
He pointed out that Sky Services and Caribbean Airlines have been assisting in transporting the passengers back to Toronto.
Only a few persons, the Minister said, are yet to return.
The low budget airlines collapsed last week leaving thousands of passengers stranded.
Zoom, based in Canada, could not pay its bills due to increased fuel costs and as such filed for bankruptcy.
Zoom was due to start the first UK-Guyana direct flights for two decades on November 20. The service was planned weekly to Guyana and Trinidad.
