One day after the discovery of the body of an elderly woman, at her New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop home, investigators have arrested two close relatives of the woman.
The body of 79 year-old Biphaya Sankar called ‘Phoolo’ was found on Monday with a gaping wound to the back of the head by one of her tenants sometime around 14:00 hours.
Sources close to the investigation said early yesterday morning the two relatives who are said to be a couple were detained to assist with investigations. Reports are that the couple has since given conflicting statements to the police.
They however admitted to visiting the woman’s home around 10:30 hours on the day she was found. This newspaper was informed that the couple said when they visited Sankar’s home they noticed a padlock on the door and immediately left after realizing she was not at home.
Meanwhile, investigators are now working on the theory that the elderly woman might have been killed because of a property dispute.
The dead woman was found by one of her tenants after he went calling for her to borrow a cutlass and she did into respond. The man had told this newspaper that after he got no response he pushed the front door which was half opened and saw his landlady lying in her sitting room in a pool of blood.
Initially, neighbours said that the woman may have been attacked sometime after 10:00 on Monday since she was last seen sometime after 9:00 on the morning before her body was found.
In the meantime, the police are awaiting the results of a post mortem examination which is expected to be conducted sometime later today.
