Two Parika residents were yesterday charged with raping a minor.
Arlex Abraham, 38, and Curbret Elgin, 37, are accused of having carnal knowledge of a minor without her consent on August 29 at an East Bank Essequibo location.
When Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson Ogle asked whether they had anything to say, Abraham said that on the day in question he and Elgin were having a drink at a nearby liquor shop. He said that he heard a woman screaming and went to the back of the building to see what was taking place.
On arriving there he saw a group of men on the minor.
He said that he started to fight off the men, but was dealt a chop to his head.
He alleged that the victim had been drinking with the men.
Abraham accused the police of “cooking up” the allegations against them.
Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews objected to bail. He told the court that if bail is granted, the accused would ‘interfere’ with the minor.
Bail was denied and the two are to make their next court appearance on September 8 at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
