A first half hat-trick by Leon ‘Zambuly’ Yaw piloted Flamingo to a comprehensive 5-0 win over Northern Rangers at the Camptown ground, Campbellville yesterday afternoon when play in the Banks Beer division-one league continued.
Over at the Parade ground in Middle Street, Beacon edged Houston Stars by the odd goal in three, both their goals coming off the boot of Sherwin Grimes.
Flamingo, aiming to finish in the top two to earn a place in the Premier League ranks, showed ominous form despite not being at their best.
Yaw was in destructive mood and mesmerised the Rangers defence for the entire half. Rangers started the game with just 8 players and Flamingo made them pay dearly for their lack of discipline.
Yaw ripped the nets apart in the 2nd, 9th and 24th minute. Shem Porter broke the sequence of Yaw’s domination with a 20th minute strike as the first half ended 4-0.
During the final minutes of the first half Rangers were at full strength but unable to keep back the offensive minded Flamingo side.
To their credit however, the Rangers were able to stem the flow of goals with an improved second half display, creating quite a few chances but unable to make them count.
Porter, who made several promising runs down the flanks was able to get into the box on one occasion but was brought down and the resulting penalty being converted by Errol Squires in the 63rd, their 5th and final goal of the game.
At the Parade ground, Grimes’ double in the 16th and 37th minutes sealed full points for Beacons against Houston Stars who pulled one back in the 51st minute through Jermaine Gilbert.
Two more games are slated for this afternoon at the Banks DIH ground, Thirst Park. In opening play at 17:30hrs, Thomas United face Black Pearl with the feature match bringing together BK International Western Tigers and the University of Guyana.
