As assured by Education Minister Shaik Baksh, public schools countrywide, with the exception of a few, were reopened yesterday.
Visits to several city schools revealed that while some had capacity attendance, others were able only to record about 50 per cent attendance.
Yesterday marked the beginning of the new school term, and some teachers lamented the fact that some children were missing on the first day following a lengthy vacation.
Among the schools that reported good attendance was the St Margaret’s Primary, where even the grade one pupils seemed alert and ready to learn, despite their new environment.
According to some teachers of the schools that reported limited attendance, the reduced number of students was probably due to students still being in a ‘holiday mood.’
One teacher related that the students were probably still tired from the Carifesta X activities, since many of them actively participated in the event.
But despite the mixed turnout rate, the teachers in general seemed enthusiastic about the new term, mooting that they intend to make the best of it.
“This term, I’m teaching a new class, so right now I’m trying to get to know them (children). I think this term will be a good one,” a teacher from the Ketley Primary School said.
And while the word is that teachers and students alike are still beginning to get into the rhythm of school, most teachers have explained that, by next week, things will be fully on stream.
Meanwhile, schools like the St George’s Community High, Stella Maris Primary and a few others are still undergoing rehabilitative work and thus were not opened yesterday.
It is however expected that the works will be completed during the course of this week, paving the way for those schools to be re-opened by next Monday.
