The Carifesta/Topco Juice Chess Tournament got under way last Sunday with the first four rounds. National Champion Kriskal Persaud took the lead after the final round of the day. The player of the day was Taffin Khan, who made a bold move to play in the senior category.
In his first round he defeated the experience Shiv Nandalall. Khan was well set with a pawn, knight and rook versus a rook end game against the National Champion, but was unable to capitalize and had to settle for a draw, he also held the veteran player Ewan Devonish, who is visiting from the United States, to a draw.
The points standing after four rounds; Kriskal Persaud 3 ½ , Taffin Khan, Michael Perreira, Haatram Persaud, Shiv Nandalall and Learie Webster on 3, Ewan Devonish 2 ½ , Loris Nathoo, Kenrick Brathwaite, Alexander Duncan, Errol Tiwari and David Khan on 2, Irshad Mohamed and Jason Allicock on 1 ½ , Raoul Bhudu, Alex Joseph and Hemraj Sanichara on 1 point.
In the junior category, Ryan Singh is in the lead with 4 points, Saeed Ali on 3, Khalid Gajraj and Irshad Ishmael 2 apiece, and Sheriffa Ali on 1 point.
The tournament continues this Sunday with the final four rounds at the Keishar’s Sport Club on Camp and Hadfield Street at 10:00am.
