– one body recovered
Four persons perished in the Essequibo River following a collision between a motor powered boat and a canoe early yesterday morning. Rescuers are combing the river for the bodies of three of the victims after recovering the body of 40-year-old Lionel Williams, of Rupununi. The incident occurred at about 05:00 hours, just off Kurupukari
Kaieteur News understands that the canoe and the motor boat were proceeding in opposite directions and because of poor visibility they collided.
The passengers of the canoe were all hurled into the river and desperate attempts to save them failed. Williams’ body was subsequently fished out of the river, while the three other bodies remained missing up to late last evening.
Police ranks in the Sub Division have been dispatched to the area to conduct investigations.
