The Guyana Police Force is informing members of the public that offering of inducements to members of the force for favours is an offence and can lead to serious consequences.
The warning comes in the wake of the arrest of a police rank, manning a roadblock on the East Bank of Demerara, for accepting gratification from a driver of a motor vehicle.
Police in a press release stated that as recent as Saturday, a policeman had been arrested for accepting gratification from the driver of a motor vehicle.
And in another incident, a West Demerara man is alleging that ranks at the roadblock on the East Coast forcefully took away $50,000 from him on Sunday.
The man, Vishnu Jodhan, told this newspaper that he was returning from neighbouring Suriname with an amplifier which was purchased in the Dutch-speaking republic.
He said that when he was stopped at the roadblock, he produced a receipt for the equipment but the ranks insisted that he be taken into custody since he had returned to Guyana through what is known as the ‘back track’.
According to Jodhan, to avoid being detained, he offered the ranks $5000, which was promptly refused.
He said that two ranks placed him into a vehicle and took him to another location, where they reportedly took away $50,000.
This newspaper contacted senior police officials, who immediately launched an investigation.
However, this newspaper has since learnt that Jodhan has not yet provided investigators with a statement.
Several persons have reported being harassed by the police at various roadblocks, with many of them reportedly having to hand over a ‘towel’ ($1000) on demand.
The police force is calling on all law abiding persons to report incidents of police misconduct to the Office of Professional Responsibility, so that a proper investigation can be carried out and appropriate action taken where necessary.
