National 20/20 all-rounder Orin Ford grabbed 4-25 while an attacking 40 from West Indies under-19 Vice Captain Steven Jacobs spurred Malteenoes to a last over two-wicket victory against GCC at Bourda on Saturday as Guyana’s Neal & Massy 40 overs first division cricket competition resumed.
National under-19 left-handed opener Jeetendra Sookdeo stroked four fours in his 78-ball 49 before he was run out with GCC being dismissed for 150 in 39.2 overs as the off-spin of Ford, Jacobs (8-1-18-1) and left-arm spinner Damien Vantull (8-3-21-0) restricted the score on a heavy outfield and slow pitch.
Jacobs, who led the West Indies under-19 side during the last KFC Cup regional one-day series before going with the side to Malaysia for the last under-19 World Cup, then struck six fours from 53 balls in his 40 and added 60 for the first wicket with Shemroy Barrington (29) to set Malteenoes on course to 151-8 off 39.5 overs as former Guyana under-15 player Delon Fernandes took 3-20 and Sookdeo 2-27 in a losing cause.
Former Guyana youth player Trevor Henry supported Sookdeo with 26 before he was caught off Ford, while only Ravi Sarwan, the younger brother of West Indies player Ramnaresh Sarwan, who made 11 and Elon Fernandes (12) of the other batsmen reached double figures for GCC in sweltering heat.
Extras contributed 26 as Vantull, whose last over cost 10 runs, and Jacobs, tied the batsmen down as Ford picked up important wickets. Former Guyana under-19 player Danny Narayan (26) kept Malteenoes in the fight before he was run out with four required from five balls.
Fernandes, who also had a three-wicket haul in his last first division game, shrugged off the disappointment of his surprise omission from the Demerara under-17 team for this weekend’s inter county game with accurate bowling to remind the selectors of his all-round value to the team after playing at the under-19 Inter-County level last year.
This was Malteenoes’ third consecutive win following victories against GYO and GDF.
