A South Ruimveldt businessman sustained cuts to his hands while jumping from the upper flat of his Lots 608-609 Caneview Avenue house, which was engulfed in fire.
Linden Moore was asleep when the heat from the blaze awoke him, at about 18:00 hours yesterday.
But by then the entire interior of the wooden building was in flames, and the thick smoke made visibility almost impossible.
There was only one thing left for Moore to do, and that was to jump through a glass window clad in only his underwear.
He did not manage to save anything, and had to rely on neighbours to clothe him, which enabled him to go to the Georgetown Hospital to treat his wounds.
The entire house was gutted, and a vehicle which was parked in the yard was also damaged.
Some residents said that they saw smoke but thought that someone was burning a rubbish heap.
They claimed that they only realized that the house was on fire when they saw fire tenders racing through the area.
Moore, who was alone in the house at the time of the fire, said that he worked through Saturday night into Sunday morning at the Carifesta Grand Village at Sophia, and came home and fell asleep.
He says that he did not leave anything on the stove and cannot say what the origin of the fire was.
“I really don’t know,” Moore said when asked what caused the blaze.
“When I wake up I see the fire. The whole place was on fire, and I jump through the window,” he told this newspaper.
Residents say that the fire department responded promptly and limited the fire to Moore’s house.
