Residents of Bartica say they are satisfied that works are finally being carried out on the Four Mile Bartica-Potaro Road, which has been in a disastrous state for approximately five years.
Kaieteur News understands that the road has already undergone grading, and construction is slated to commence soon.
Residents expressed their satisfaction to this newspaper that at least some amount of work has been executed on the road, which they say indicates that action is now being taken by the administration.
In late July of this year, residents of the community had resorted to protest action in an effort to bring the condition of the road to the Government’s attention.
Some residents had noted that the road was in such a terrible state that it was almost impossible for vehicles to traverse in and out of the area.
In cases of emergency, it was explained, operators of taxis and minibuses charged as much as $10,000 to go into the areas, since they feared damage to their vehicles.
Persons had indicated that the road was always in a bad state, but it was still somewhat accessible by residents. However, due to the constant rains, it has become also impassable.
Minister of Public Works and Hydraulics, Robeson Benn, had told Kaieteur News that the delay in rehabilitating the road had to do with bad weather.
The minister had noted that his ministry would not have ‘wasted’ money in doing the road when the weather was not favourable for works to be carried out.
Minister Benn had explained that if the road was rehabilitated during the rainy season, its durability would have been compromised.
