Beacon once again proved what champions are made of, staving off a
spirited challenge from Thomas United to win on penalty kicks, booking their place in the championship match of the 2nd Annual Chubby under-14 League.
Beacon opponent in the final is the orange-hot Fruta Conquerors who disposed of GFC in clinical fashion 7-0, in yesterday’s other semi-final. Conquerors were led by their captain Pernel Schultz with a hat-trick.
Thomas and GFC will now face off in the third place game on Saturday at 09:00hrs at the same venue which will be followed by the championship match and the presentation of prizes.
Thomas turned in another robust performance matching Beacon in every department (offensively & defensively) during regulation time.
And like the Fruta Conquerors /First Assembly of God quarter-final game on Friday, penalty kicks were needed to decide the winner of the encounter.
Beacon were large and in charge of this segment, nailing all three shots while Thomas United missed all theirs, Beacon goalkeeper Devon Charles saved two of the shots by Thomas, the other going wide of the mark.
The trio scoring for Beacons were tested, tried and proved players at this level, Darrell Harris, Deon Alfred and Mark Walton.
But Fruta Conquerors were not in for a repeat of their quarter-final game demolishing GFC with disdain. Captain Pernel Schultz who had scored just once before in a group match against Santos upped his game when it mattered.
His first goal, which came in the 15th minute, saw him dribbling two GFC defenders before blasting the ball to goal.
One minute later it was Schultz again, this time his well taken and accurate corner kick sailed into the back of the nets, this goal once again highlighted his status as one of the players for the future.
The score remained unchanged at the half but on resumption, Conquerors went straight to the business of scoring.
Romelo Fraser was on target 4 minutes after the resumption (34th), Alwin Moore tucked in one of his own 4 minutes later and Ryan ‘Bum Bum’ Hackett scored what could be considered one of the best goals of the tournament in the 55th minute.
He received a pass deep in the GFC half took the ball into the box dribbled 3 defenders, swung around took care of another before slotting the ball under the goalkeeper who tried desperately to nullify Hackett’s excellent and productive run but was unsuccessful.
Eon Alleyne made the count seven (7) when his long range shot sailed into goal in the 57th minute.
A well earned and commanding victory for the Conquerors lads, enjoying home turf advantage which they have utilised to great effect along with equally good crowd support.
The first tournament which was held at the under-13 level was played entirely on a league format, being decided by points but the organizers and sponsor, Guyana Beverage Inc., decided to use the same players again so they upped the age to 14.
Beacon, playing as Uprising last time around, won the tournament ahead of Santos with Thomas taking third and Fruta Conquerors, fourth.
This year’s final four teams underline the consistency of the top junior clubs with Beacon again playing for top honours against Conquerors, who have taken their game a notch higher.
Having already added the Courts Pee Wee under-11 title to their collection, the Fruta team is aiming for their second junior crown, this year.
