The Fashion Focus team took fashion to another level on Thursday evening at the Sophia Exhibition Site when they transformed beautiful pieces of fabric into exotic, eye-catching designs using the wrapping method.
Under the expert fingers and creativity of Barbadian Richard Young, fabrics were transformed into African and Indian attire, creating a colourful and artistic ethnic fashion line that was well applauded by the viewers.
With elaborate but appropriate makeup, the pieces were certainly breathtaking, and were well displayed by the Fashion Focus models.
Using pins and the knotting method, Young, through practical onstage demonstrations, taught Guyanese the art of using simple fabric to create alluring clothing that could be worn at any occasion.
Fabric was transformed into saris, dhotis, and almost every form of African wear possible.
Female models were transformed in Oriental beauties at some periods, while the males took on the look of stunning but very virile African natives.
Models glided onstage with the fabric draped gracefully on their arms, and stood as mannequins while Young very intricately executed his creativity, explaining every detail needed for an inexperienced individual to bring to life the exquisite designs he produced as the finished product.
Models wearing simple black dresses were soon fitted with startlingly beautiful head turbans, all created from pieces of fabric under the expertise of Young.
Meanwhile, at around the same time, the Country Presentations, which featured Suriname and Guyana, were taking place in another section of the venue.
Representing the local shores was the Couchman Family Band, thrilling the audience with several original pieces and some of the selections of celebrities like Mariah Carey and others.
The Suriname contingent performed well, singing in their own language, but it was Guyana’s New Melody Makers Band which stole the show, belting a wide range of music which unleashed ‘an ethnic musical fusion’ that obviously thrilled the large gathering.
