Though the official Carifesta Book Launch has been scheduled for Sunday at the Umana Yana, several segments are ongoing daily at the Youth Village in the National Park.
Commencing last Saturday, authors and poets have been giving sneak peeks and samples of their literature.
Guyanese Petamber Persaud who is actually in charge of the routine launched his ‘Caribbean Anthology of Poems for Carifesta X’, while a prelude of three volumes of the ‘BIM’ journal from Barbados was aired the same day, as were ‘Into the Music’ by Marlene St. Rose (Trinidad & Tobago/St. Kitts) and Shades of Life by M.V. Mc Rae.
The audience was treated to a ‘taste’ of ‘Elemental Poems’ by John R. Lee, Unite my Wrappings by Joseph Earle, and Esteem by Stephanie Bowry.
On Sunday, patrons heard extracts from ‘Guyana Second Edition’ by Arif Ali, while there were pieces including ‘Molly and the Muslin Stick’ by David Dabydeen. ‘No Mother, No Land’ co-edited by Kampta Karran, and the Balgobin Saga by Petamber Persaud.
Monday was the day for snatches of the Trinidad Noir by Liza Allen-Agostini (T&T) and Troubled Dreams (a novel and two other books) by Jacques Compton (St. Lucia).
An Introduction to Theatre Arts and the West Indians were also presentations by the St. Lucian, while V1 Callaloo by Callaloo Poets and a Taste of Carifesta by the Culinary Arts (Guyana) were other splendid presentations on that date.
On Tuesday, it was ‘Wake People Wake-The Sacred and the Profane’ by Rawle Winston Titus of Trinidad followed by Ira Aldridge celebrated 19th Century Actor by Martin Hoyles. Then came Passion: Healthy Recipes with Passion Fruit by Thelsha Garnette and Donna Morrison. The Cost of Sugar by Cynthia Mc Leod was well received by listeners while the Life and Works of Bill Rogers by Roger Hinds was also an engaging feature.
In a brief comment, Petamber Persaud said that there was never a dull moment in the literature camp since the Youth Village began.
He added that though the official launch is billed for Sunday, several authors have been launching at the venue to ensure that all their works are advertised. He added that the impact in the book camp has been positive and crowds have flocked the booths continuously for viewings and to make purchases.
