Residents of Belle Plaine Village, one of the most populated areas on the island of Wakenaam, have managed to rid their neighbourhood of a 10-foot Caiman which was in the river near the sea wall.
The reptile was seen on Tuesday last, around midday, by a 10-year-old boy who observed the creature feeding on a chicken that was dumped overboard.
The lad raised an alarm and residents rushed to the area. A farmer fired several rounds at the Caiman before it submerged itself in the river.
While the residents were certain that the bullets hit the Caiman, they were not sure that it was dead and so they were extremely cautious.
The residents use the river water for bathing, domestic and other purposes. There was a collective sigh of relief on Wednesday morning when the reptile floated up bearing the wounds made by the bullets. They pulled it out of the river and placed on the road side where scores of residents gathered to have a view of the large reptile.
One resident remarked that it was a baby Caiman.
On November 4th, 2007, Vidya Rajnarine called Pretty, a six-year-old girl who lived about six hundred yards from where the reptile was captured mysteriously disappeared. She was last seen by the river side. There has been no trace of her since, despite intensive searches by relatives. Some residents are of the opinion that the child may have been devoured by one of these creatures since they feel there are others living in the area.
