– admit boarding vessel at 03:00hrs
Once again the Guyana Defence Force is forced to defend its ranks against allegations of torture and robbery.
This follows allegations by two youths of torture and robbery at the hands of soldiers stationed in the North West District.
In a press release issued by the Guyana Police Force, the GDF ranks who were allegedly involved in the incident have denied assaulting and robbing two teenagers last Saturday.
Police in a statement said that they are investigating the report that on Saturday last at 03:00hrs, members of the Guyana Defence Force boarded a boat at Kumaka Waterfront and allegedly searched the boat.
According to the police, two suspects on the boat alleged that they were assaulted by the GDF ranks.
However, the police said that when they made the report, there were no visible signs of injury on the exposed parts of their body and statements were taken from them.
“The members of the GDF were contacted and admitted that they boarded the vessel but denied assaulting the crew members,” the statement said.
It added that there is no report of any money or articles being removed from the boat or any robbery being committed.
Kurt Wong, 16, and his friend Anthony are alleging that they were tortured by the soldiers who had invaded the merchant boat they were sleeping on, keeping watch.
Wong claimed that the men who were in civilian clothing carried machines guns and identified themselves as policemen.
A senior member of the GDF has contacted this newspaper for information on the teenagers since the army plans to mount its own investigation.
