Four of the six road teams earned points in the opening matches of the 2010 CONCACAF World Cup Qualification Semifinal Round.
Group A: Two goals by Keon Daniel and one by Cornell Glen helped visiting Trinidad & Tobago to a 3-1 victory over Cuba at the Estadio Pedro Marrero in Havana. Meanwhile, a goal from Carlos Bocanegra led the USA to a 1-0 win against Guatemala at the Estadio Mateo Flores in Guatemala City.
Group B: Canada were held to a 1-1 draw at home against Jamaica at BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario. Julian DeGuzman gave the Maple Leafs the lead early in the second half, but Andrew Williams tied it for the Reggae Boyz. Elsewhere, Mexico came back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat visiting Honduras by a score of 2-1 at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca.
Group C: A penalty kick goal by Alvaro Saborio gave the hosts, Costa Rica a 1-0 triumph over El Salvador at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa in San José. Meanwhile, Haiti earned a 2-2 draw against visiting Surinam at Port-au-Prince’s Stade Sylvio Cator.
Wensley Christoph notched two goals to give Surinam the lead, but Frantz Bertin and Brunel Fucien scored in the final minutes of the match for Haiti.
The CONCACAF World Cup Qualification Semifinal Round continues on September 6 with the following matches (home team listed first): Trinidad & Tobago – Guatemala; Cuba – USA; Jamaica – Mexico; Canada – Honduras; El Salvador – Haiti; Costa Rica – Surinam.
After four additional match dates, the top two teams from each of the three groups will advance to the six-team CONCACAF Final Round scheduled for February 11 to October 14, 2009.
The top three teams from the CONCACAF Final Round in 2009 will automatically qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
CONCACAF’s fourth place finisher will play off with CONMEBOL’s fifth-place team in a home-and-away series for one of the last berths to the FIFA event.
