DEAR EDITOR,
Kaieteur News of 24/08/08 carried two articles to which the people of this Nation should pay particular attention.
Adam Harris’ piece on Glen Lall’s stand on questionable concessions and GRA’s interest consequent upon Lall’s expose’ highlights the depth to which this administration will sink to silence people who challenge them.
The USA and Canada have countless examples of immigrants becoming business tycoons because the playing fields are even in those countries.
In Guyana, an importer is taxed more for an item while another is “slacked” for the same item because he has contacts at Customs.
If one challenges the valuation or enforcement officers at Customs House, one would have committed an unpardonable crime: One is put on the ‘trips’ list for “special treatment”.
Any investigator brave enough to study the Customs Department will unearth so much corruption that it will make a strong case for the dismissal of the Customs hierarchy.
The Minister of Finance has been noticeably silent on issues regarding the operations of the Customs Department.
So, bravo, Glen! We empathise with the battles you fight. In the end, the truth will prevail!
Dale Andrews’ article on the conduct of the Joint Services at road blocks echoes the experiences of so many commuters. Very often, soldiers, unaccompanied by a police rank, are asking for drivers’ licences, etc. and detaining mainly buses and “shakedown” the drivers and conductors.
And they make no secret of it. Lest we miss it, there is an “attitude” being displayed by our uniformed forces. And, before long, we will be in a police State. We have a very incompetent Commissioner of Police and Chief of Staff.
Their major success has been to allow the real criminals to slip through their fingers on a continuous basis. Bandits can shoot back. Law abiding citizens do not.
This country has become a “shake down country”. When you come into contact with a Custom officer or public servant or police or soldier, expect to be asked (told) “lef a raise”.
I urge Guyanese and visitors: refuse to “lef a raise” and let them lock us all up. The world will then be witness to this nonsense in this country.
