NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – A prisoner is on the run after escaping in Houdini-like fashion from the New Amsterdam hospital early yesterday morning.
According to police reports, 22 year-old Lyndon Fabulous, of 97 First Avenue, Bartica, was serving a three-year sentence for simple larceny.
On August 19, Fabulous was admitted to Ward Eight of the New Amsterdam hospital after he was allegedly stabbed by another prisoner at the New Amsterdam prison.
A Prison officer was posted on guard at his bedside around the clock. Police reports further indicate that the prison officer on duty at that time claimed about 02:00 hours yesterday he placed shackles on Fabulous’ leg and attached it to the bed.
The officer reportedly left to answer a call of nature and when he returned, the prisoner had vanished. The restraining apparatus was on the bed. The lock on the side attached to the prisoner’s leg was not damaged in any way.
The prison officer raised an alarm and the matter was subsequently reported to police in Berbice. The officer is not in police custody. (Melissa Johnson)
