Police are preparing a report on their investigations into the allegations of sexual assault of a two-year-old girl by a prominent local priest.
A senior police official at the CID Headquarters, Eve Leary, told this newspaper that statements have already been taken and the file on the matter will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice on the way forward.
The priest was detained by investigators after the child’s mother reported that her daughter was sexually molested. A medical report confirmed that the child’s privacy was violated.
Reports reaching this newspaper indicate that the child’s mother lives at the home of the priest, being a family member.
A source told this newspaper that the child’s mother and the priest are the only two adults presently living at the home in the city.
It is alleged that another female relative observed that the child was having some discomfort while she was being cleaned.
The mother was informed, and the child was taken to a doctor, who confirmed their worst fears.
Suspecting that the religious leader may have been the culprit, the child’s parents reported the matter to the police, who immediately detained the priest.
A source close to the family told this newspaper that the child’s mother had been warned not to leave her child in the man’s care for any reason.
“It is an allegation, and we are going to proceed with it (the case) in the best way we know how to deal with such investigations,” a senior police source told this newspaper.
The source told this newspaper that, although an allegation was made against the priest, investigators will still have to look at all other angles, since the priest claims that the child also attends daycare.
“Although the medical showed that the child was sexually assaulted, it could have happened anywhere, and not necessarily at the home. We are checking all other leads,” the source explained.
This latest incident comes on the heels of another case of child molestation, in which a policeman is accused of sexually molesting his three-year-old son.
In that case, the policeman was detained and statements were obtained from the child’s mother, who lives in Sophia. However, no charges have been laid as yet.
Only recently, legislators proposed a bill to make it mandatory for the monitoring of paedophiles.
