As Carifesta continues to be showcased for the second time on these shores, one of Guyana’s three main religious groups made its contribution to the extragavanza, thereby creating history, as it was the first time ever that any Caribbean Muslim organization and indeed any other religious-based faith, participated in an exposition of this kind.
‘Muslim Night’ at the National Park last Sunday, was an exhibition organized by the various Muslim entities in Guyana, featuring various aspects of Islamic culture.
On display were numerous photographs and placards explaining the rich heritage of the faith. A photograph of Makkah or Mecca, Islam’s holiest city and home to the Kaaba shrine and the Grand mosque, was prominent among the collection and drew rapt attention from those that attended.
Makkah, located in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is the destination of muslim pilgrimages who go there to perform Haaj, a holy ritual that every Muslim should complete during their lifetime.
An abundance of halal food and different sweetmeats were on sale. Large numbers of people flocked the food stalls to satisfy their appetite and to savour the variety.
Apart from the excellent cuisine, a grand selection of Islamic dress and fashions were highlighted.
The day’s activities culminated with the holding of a cultural show which included the rendering of Muslim songs, including special ‘Gazals’ and ‘Qaseedas’, performed by artistes from Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.
Under the theme song, ‘Sing Children of the World’ the evening’s programme struck a special note.
Accompanied by resounding chants of Allahu Akbar (God is great) a group of young boys and girls proudly displayed fashionable Islamic wear.
During the proceedings, one of this country’s broadcasting icons, Haaji Ayube Hamid, was honoured with a special award by the Muslim community for his outstanding contribution to the preservation and development of the faith in Guyana.
President Jagdeo, who presented the award to the outstanding media personality, said afterwards that, “we live in a world that is totally unfair towards Islam because of selfish reasons. The world has misinterpreted the religion and we all need to speak out against the theory that Islam is a terrorist-based faith”.
Commending the Muslim community for a job well done in organizing the day’s festivities, the Head of State said that he hoped that the event would play a role in making Guyana and the rest of the Caribbean more aware of the true principles and ideas of the religion.
