GAWU/Guysuco wages dispute… Stalemate continues

The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) and the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) met again yesterday as conciliation continues in the wages dispute between the two parties.
This is being done even as the sugar workers continue their industrial actions causing great threat to the industry.
Kaieteur News was informed that like last Wednesday, the negotiations yesterday again did not produce any compromise.
This newspaper was told that once this continues then the discussions would meet a deadlock leading to a further phase, which is arbitration.
At the end of yesterday’s meeting both parties maintained their positions, with GAWU demanding a 14¼ percent salary increase for the workers while GuySuCo stood its ground with an offer of 5¼ percent.
The 5¼ percent is an increase from the sugar company’s original offer of 4 ¼ percent. However, the union rejected the new offer.
At present, the sugar company is examining the possibility of closing the Le Bonne Intention (LBI) estate sooner than expected.
Last week, President Bharrat Jagdeo said that the decision to close the LBI sugar estate will be based on the survival of the industry.
However, no firm decision has been taken on the closure of the estate. Chief Executive Officer (ag) Paul Bhim told the media that should these ‘wildcat’ strikes continue, then management will be forced to re-look at whether it can continue to sustain eight operating factories. Soured wage negotiations between the company and the GAWU resulted in workers taking a standoff since last Wednesday.
GuySuCo is contractually obligated to supply its main European customer with 55,000 tonnes of sugar by September 5. Failing to meet this obligation would see the corporation losing US$70 for every tonne of sugar not supplied by the date to that particular market.
Presently, the corporation has shipped 16,400 of the 55,000 tonnes.
