Bail was granted to the tune of $75,000 to a city businessman who has been charged with demanding money by menace with intent to steal.
The accused, 35 year-old Dexter Lynch called ‘Yankee’ made his appearance yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Priya Beharry.
It is alleged that on Sunday August 17, last, he demanded the sum of $100,000 from Sherwin Trotman while assuring Trotman that he could secure bail for him, but with intent to steal the money.
To the charge, Lynch pleaded not guilty. He was represented by defence counsel Mark Waldron.
According to the facts as stated by police prosecutor Denise Griffith, on the day in question, the accused told the virtual complainant, who is a prisoner, that he could secure bail for him but he would have to pay him $100,000.
Meanwhile, Waldron in his bail application told the court that his client has a fixed place of abode and operates a car wash at the junction of Princess and Smyth Streets. According to Waldron, his client’s rights have been violated since he was in police custody more than the stipulated 72 hours.
Waldron further told the court that the virtual complainant in the matter has since told investigators that he never spoke to the accused on any matter but gave the name of the person he spoke to as ‘Yankee’.
“Your worship I think my client was only implicated because of a ‘call name’,” Waldron said.
The police prosecutor did not object to bail.
The prosecutor however told the court that advice is being sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions since a few ranks from the Guyana Police Force may be involved in the matter.
After listening to the case, the Magistrate granted bail to the tune of $75,000 and Lynch is expected to make his next court appearance on September 30.
