The issue of decomposing bodies being dumped in the compound of the Le Repentir cemetery has been a longstanding issue, and despite numerous concerns being raised, the relevant authorities seem to have done nothing.
In the meantime, persons working in and around the cemetery are forced to work under those inhumane and unhealthy conditions.
As recent as last Wednesday, the rotting remains of a man were dumped at the cemetery, which houses a spanking new mortuary building which is without storage facility. The previous week, the rotting remains of other persons were dumped at the same location.
Reports are that in all instances, the remains were taken to the location by the Lyken Funeral Home, which is contracted by Government to store the remains of persons who die under mysterious circumstances.
However, on several occasions, when contacted by this newspaper for a comment on the issue, the funeral home personnel have stated that they do not store decomposed remains.
Meanwhile, when contacted yesterday, Deputy Mayor Robert Williams said the issue will soon be resolved.
He said the process of getting the Le Repentir storage facility up and running was stalled after the compressor for the refrigerator was stolen more than a year ago. According to Williams, the actual building which was supposed to house the facility was completed two years ago. Only the electrical fitting were to be installed.
As a result of the compressor being stolen and the City Council being short of funds, the decision was made to privatize the facility.
Currently, Williams said, they have found a successful business person with whom they are in discussion to have the facility privatized.
Williams said that most of the agreements have already been made, and they are now discussing the financial aspect of the deal.
In addition to that, the arrangement will cover the restoration of the entire cemetery, which is in dire need of work.
This would include fencing, cleaning and general maintenance.
