NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – Police in Berbice are on high alert and are prepared for any eventuality during the Carifesta X celebration.
Assistant Commissioner Clinton Conway, who heads Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force, said: “We are aware that when pressure is on in one area, the criminals will gravitate to other localities, including Berbice.
We experienced this several times, like during the Rose Hall bank robberies and others. Whatever happens, our action would be swift, certain and appropriate.”
In Berbice, there are three major events. The first was yesterday at the Blairmont Community Centre Ground, the other is scheduled for Hopetown on August 27, and two days later, at Albion on the Corentyne.
There are also a series of events slated for throughout the week at the University of Guyana’s Tain Campus and the New Amsterdam Town Hall.
The Commander said that, like all other divisions in the country, Division ‘B’ is prepared to ensure that the CARIFESTA activities are run-off in a peaceful manner. “We in the Guyana Police Force were planning for this event since the beginning of the year. We had to present our operational plan to Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, and other senior members for vetting and approval. We are now ready for the execution.”
There would be high visibility patrols, road blocks, searches and other operational activities, “Those ranks that were doing administrative duty as well as those in other specialized sections will be employed on front line duties to assist the regular members of the Force. We will also be utilizing members of the neighbourhood police and community policing groups to assist.”
He further added, “The neighbourhood policing and community groups are the eyes and ears of the communities, and we will depend heavily on them for intelligence, so that apart from event-driven policing, we will do a lot of intelligence-led policing.” The Commander said that there will be Joint Services’ operations as well at strategic locations.
Persons attending the major events can expect to be somewhat inconvenienced, since several road blocks will be erected as necessary. “This is the price they will have to pay for a peaceful Carifesta X operation.”
Assistant Commissioner Conway explained that Government, through the efforts of the police commissioner, provided additional financial and other resources for the celebration. These resources have been passed down to all divisions in the Guyana Police Force. According to him, police in Berbice are working in collaboration with the head quarters and the other divisions, as well as their Suriname counterparts.
A large number of persons, including participants, are entering Guyana through Moleson Creek, on the Corentyne.
