A pulsating contest is anticipated today from 09:30hrs at Enmore when Georgetown face-off with East Bank in the final of the GT&T, Gizmos & Gadgets Demerara Cricket Board Inter-Association 50-overs under-17 cricket competition.
Georgetown beat East Coast and West Demerara, while their final preliminary round game at DCC yesterday against East Bank, was washed out without a ball being bowled and go into today’s encounter as the favourites.
East Bank could be short of match practice since their victory against West Demerara was in a rain-hit 20 overs match-up while their second round encounter against East Coast ended in a no-result on Friday with them well placed on 55 without loss chasing 82 to win.
National under-15 opener Shameer Fazal and Khemraj Singh have both gotten starts in their two innings and a lot will depend on the pair to post a solid foundation for Fazir Inshan, Jason Henry, Pernell London and company to build on.
The East Bank bowling will centre round Guyana under-15 off-spinner Jagdesh Bishun, the only other player in the side with under-15 Inter-County experience while Fazal is their leading wicket taker with four wickets with his part time off-spin.
Georgetown’s strength is their bowling attack led by fast bowler Seon Daniels, the leading wicket taker in the competition, and left-arm pacer Andre Stoll.
Medium pace all-rounder Carlos La Rose, West Indies under-15 leg-spinner Amir Khan and talented off-spinner Ricardo Devers have all played at the inter county under-15 level and are also key bowlers in the City side.
Quincy Ovid and Kamal Ramkissoon shared in a 75-run opening stand against West Demerara and if they get going today against the new ball bowlers the fans could be in for some entertainment.
Delon Fernandes, Dayanand Roopnarine, La Rose, Skipper Dexter Solomon, who has scored the tournament’s lone fifty, and all-rounder Stoll are also capable of contributing with the bat today on what should be a slow track.
Meanwhile, East Coast scored a 16-run consolation win against West Demerara in their final preliminary round game at Lusignan yesterday in a low-scoring affair. East Coast fell for 90 but then bowled out the visitors for 74.
After today’s final a 26-man squad will be selected for a two-day trial match on Wednesday and Thursday to select the Demerara team to face Essequibo at Enterprise on September 6 & 7 in the opening game of the Clico under-17 Inter-County tournament.
Essequibo face defending champions Berbice at Albion on September 9& 10 before Demerara and Berbice clash in the final round at Wales on September 12 & 13.
