Following rivalry on day-four of the Chubby, under-14 league organised by the Georgetown Football Association and sponsored by Guyana Beverage Inc., Fruta Conquerors by way of walk over from Pele maintain their strong hold at the top of group A, while Renaissance who drew with Thomas United 1-1 are leaders of group B.
Enjoying victory for the first time was First Assembly of God who defeated Flamingo 2-0, Beacon had to dig deep to win their encounter against Santos 2-1, Strike Again got past Sunburst Camptown 2-0 while Rhythm Squad fought back from being two down to draw with GFC.
The day began in cool conditions after 10:00hrs was beyond the 08:30hrs proposed start but the sun came out in all its glory around 11:00hrs but this did not daunt the spirits of these young and energetic future Golden Jaguars.
First Assembly of God, who suffered defeats in their two opening encounters, had shown the ability to play good in the first half but cracked up in the final half but this was not the case against Flamingo, yesterday.
They showed their true potential and reaped the rewards of keeping their focus with goals either side of play. Kevin Herdual gave them the lead 5 minutes into the game which was sealed by Kevin Henry’s goal effort in the 42nd minute.
Strike Again, who were hammered by Thomas United on Friday 5-0, rebounded in style to hand Sunburst Camptown their first loss of the competition by a 2-0 margin.
Delano Baptiste in the 18th and Ezekiel Jones in the 47th netted for the winners who has now moved to 7 points and second in group B to Renaissance who fought bravely to earn an equal share of the points against Thomas United who took the early lead in their match up.
Diequan Vancooten pushed them into the lead after only 7 minutes of play, an advantage which they enjoyed for much of the encounter.
As was the case in their previous matches, Renaissance had to turn their leading goal scorer Selwyn Williams to see them to safety. Williams, whose tally now moves to six in four games, struck the back of the nets for his team in the 50th minute to even the score which remained unchanged when the final whistle sounded.
GFC who started the competition with 2 wins had to settle for a share of the points against Rhythm Squad.
The GFC boys were looking comfortable leading 2-0 with goals from Shackette Brown (7) and Tariq Dakhil (11) but a spirited fight back from Rhythm Squad saw them drawing even in the second half.
Beacon, who won the tournament when it was played at the under 13 level last year, and certainly aiming to win again this year, turned back the challenge of Santos 2-1. A Delon Harris 14th minute effort gave Beacon the early advantage.
Earland Ricketts pulled one back for Santos in the 46th to even things up but Beacon regained the lead and the match in the final minute of regulation time compliments of Michael Campbell’s 60th minute goal.
The players will take a break today with rivalry set to resume tomorrow at the Tucville ground.
Six teams make up each group, A & B with the top four from each group after playing each other moving into the knock stage.
