The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association would now be able to better equip its boxers due to the substantial donation of boxing equipments from the Chinese Embassy through that country’s Ambassador to Guyana, His Excellency Zhang Jungao.
The equipment, which cost over Guy$1,500,000, includes70 pairs boxing gloves, 70 Boxing Helmets, 72 pairs of boxing shoes, 35 boxing athletic supporters, 70 mouth guards and 15 pairs speed balls.
The Ambassador expressed the hope that the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association will make full use of the boxing equipment donated to ensure that Guyana will be able to send a team of boxers to the next Olympics since no boxers qualified to go to the present Olympics that is taking place in China.
Ambassador Zhang Jungao also said that his country is always willing to assist Guyana in providing assistance towards the development of sports in our country.
His country has already given assistance in providing coaches to assist the Guyana Table Tennis Association and the Tai Chi Marital Arts Association.
It was highlighted that the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association is a Non Profit Organisation and therefore depends on donations such as what was provided by the Chinese embassy in order to carry out its functions.
It is also athletes from the depressed communities who predominantly take up amateur boxing and are most often not able to provide even a proper uniform outfit whenever they have to participate in competitions or tournaments.
According to a release from the GABA, it is therefore usually the Association’s responsibility in ensuring that boxers are properly uniformed and look presentable when participating on their behalf.
The equipment donated by the Chinese embassy will therefore go a long way in ensuring that the boxers from the various boxing Gyms such as the recently opened Timehri Boxing Gym, the Linden Boxing Gym, Wismar Boxing Gym, Port Kaituma Boxing Gym and all of the other Gyms are properly equipped.
Meanwhile, the GABA team which recently participated in the Caribbean Amateur Boxing Association championships in Trinidad and Tobago took a photo opportunity to parade their medals won.
Those receiving medals were: Herlando Allicock (Flyweight) Gold, Moochan Sankar (Fly weight) Gold, Stefan Gouveia (Bantam Weight) Gold, Clevon Rock (Bantam Weight) Gold, Mandessa Moses (Female) Gold, Rondell Douglas (Featherweight) Silver, Akeem Alexander (Welterweight) Bronze.
GABA and the boxers have expressed their gratitude to the many sponsors who came forward to make their outing to Trinidad a successful one. Among those sponsors are: Ms. Amanda St. Aubyn General Manager Of Scotia Bank, Mr. Paul Chan-A-Sue CEO of Ansa McAl (now retired), Mr. Frank DeAbreu General Manager of DeSinco, Mr. Jose Da Silva General Manager of Modern Optical, Mr. K.A. Juman Yassin President of the Guyana Olympic Association, Commodore Gary Best Head of the Guyana Defence Force, Dr. Frank Anthony Minister of Culture Youth & Sports, Commissioner of Inland Revenue and Mr. Carlton De Four of Caribbean Airlines.
GABA is also of the hope that the same success will be seen when their team participate in the 111 Commonwealth Youth Games scheduled for October in the City of Pune, India.
