It may be wishful thinking to expect that Carifesta X will transform Guyana’s luck for the remainder of this year.
That the remaining few months will evidence a change in fortune for our country is something, however, that every single Guyanese should wish for.
In an age when it is said you have to create your own luck, Guyana surely needs a change of fortune, and perhaps, just perhaps, the good vibes that will be generated during Carifesta X may be the tonic that this country needs to finally put behind the most tragic eight months this country has ever seen.
After the terrible events at Lusignan, Bartica and Lindo Creek, every Guyanese needs to work to change this country’s fortunes. If there was ever a time when we ought to really give more than we normally give back to our country, it is now.
After having endured so much pain, after having bled and shared such deep sorrows this year, we finally have an opportunity to enjoy what a great people we are and how fortunate we are to be part of a region blessed with so much talent and cultural diversity.
If we play our part in making Guyana shine brightly through our hospitality and the pride we take in things Guyana, we will be making a significant contribution to not only ensuring that hope is alive but perhaps that our luck would finally have turned for the better.
We still have our problems. But there is nothing that cannot be fixed. We have all come together beautifully so far for Carifesta X.
True there have been hiccups, but that was to be expected considering the short notice that we have had to prepare for such a massive undertaking.
Coming close on the heels of the hosting of Cricket World Cup 2007, Guyana has again demonstrated the capability to organise mass national and international events and do so in a manner that would generate local pride and satisfaction at our efforts.
No matter what differences we may have with the government, no matter what are the immediate concerns about good governance, Carifesta is a national undertaking.
It is about Guyana and our ability to showcase not just our organisational capacity but also to put out on display those national attributes for which our people are renowned.
As someone wrote a few days ago, if we fail, it is not just the government that will look bad, the entire country will look bad, and if we succeed it is the people who will also be made proud.
We therefore urge all Guyanese to see Carifesta X as belonging to all of Guyana and to work towards its success.
More importantly, we hope that after the festival ends that the goodwill and good feelings generated can be a precursor of better things to come.
We should all build on what has so far been done and what is likely to be achieved over the coming days. Physically, we have seen a transformation of various parts of the country.
We have to find ways where this facelift becomes a permanent feature so that we do not have to wait until the next event before we brighten and clean up our country.
We hope that all those who have worked together to ensure that Guyana was ready for Carifesta X will equally be willing to work together to sustain the momentum.
More importantly we hope that the remainder of the year will bring other good bounties to Guyana, more so in the form of increased growth, a safe environment, a reduction in the cost of living.
This may be just a wish. But Carifesta X has so far shown just how much of a difference we can make if we all work together. Perhaps Carifesta X will leave us with a good luck charm that will change our fortunes for the better.
