The sky is the limit – Ninvalle
By Rawle Welch
“The sky is the limit and this could signal the start of some fruitful careers,” Parliamentary Secretary within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steve Ninvalle told participants at the ‘Summer Football Camp’ which concluded last Friday, at the Kildonan Community Centre ground in Berbice.
The Camp organised by the Ministry was the third conducted under the guidance of Coach attached to the National Sports Commission Dennis ‘Chow’ Hunte with those at Mahaicony and Blairmont preceding last Friday’s, while the one at Corriverton will bring an end to activities before school reopens.
Speaking at the conclusion, Ninvalle related to the twenty-four aspiring players, which included two females, that contrary to those who are seeking to enunciate negative comments on the purpose of the activity, the Ministry will continue to organise and support the project regardless of the criticisms from a few who are bent on attempting to stymie the development of the sport at the grassroots level.
The Parliamentary Secretary further stated that a few individuals who should be in full support of the development of the game from the grassroots level have demonstrated by their actions an unhelpful position that is contrary to aiding in the sport’s advancement.
He cited the Ministry’s recent attempt to organise the Inter-Block Tournament as one which has not received the backing of some sections of the football fraternity, a situation that the Ministry would not allow to deter their efforts in helping to identify and develop talent in the respective communities.
Ninvalle shortly before presenting certificates to the participants thanked Hunte for sharing his expertise during the exercise, Co-ordinator of the camps Abu Huriarah, Project Co-ordinator Sulaiman Sakur, Mae’s Private School and Presidential Adviser Odinga Lumumba for their support.
Huriarah in his opening remarks gave a brief overview of the activity, disclosing that the final camp will see all four areas converge at Corriverton for a competition among each other.
He urged the Ministry to continue to conduct the clinics on a regular basis so that the participants can progress in the sport and not allow the lessons learnt to go to waste.
The Project Co-ordinator expressed thanks to the Ministry and Hunte for their support to the youths of the Berbice area.
Meanwhile, David Sinclair and Cliff McKenzie were presented with boots for their outstanding performances during the camp, while sisters Tanaicia Hazel and Tandica Mendonca were recognised for being the lone females among the group.
The camp lasted from August 18-22, while the segment at Corriverton is scheduled to begin tomorrow.
