As the conclusion of the August vacation for students nears, some have benefited significantly from the benevolence of Keishar’s Gift Shoppe and Variety Store.
On Thursday, representatives of the establishment donated vouchers to students of the Sophia Primary School to facilitate their comfortable return to the institution of learning for the Christmas term.
The students received packages in a special presentation in a classroom at the school. All were presented with uniforms, shoes, socks and stationery.
The venture complements the already existing Keishar’s Christmas voucher programme, the everyday feeding programme, and the student’s gift certificate programme.
The school feeding programme is already conducted every day during the lunch periods, and will continue to operate as school re-opens.
The parents or students could purchase any school item at Keishar’s at a discount price with their gift certificates, and the company also presents toys and other items to the students for the Christmas season.
“Without schools there is no development, and one cannot learn on an empty stomach,” said senior supervisor of Keishar’s, Alphonso Skepmire, as he referred to the programmes.
He said that the programme has been operating for the past five years, and will continue.
It began with about 50 recipients, and today has some 109 beneficiaries, all of whom reside in Sophia.
The main aim of the venture is to serve as an encouragement for learning in the less fortunate areas.
Kaieteur News understands that the items are valued in excess of $500,000.
One of the parents told this newspaper that most of the recipients come from single-parent households.
The parent, teachers and students all expressed their gratitude to the company.
