A former policeman has been charged with the murders of Enmore businessman Akbar Alli, who was gunned down on Brickdam last month, and Ramrattan Singh, who was slain in front of Guyana Stores Limited in May 2007.
The accused, Andrew Morris, appeared before Magistrate Priya Beharry to answer to the said charges.
It is alleged that on Thursday July 24, 2008, at around 12:00 hrs, Akbar Alli, a scrap metal dealer, and his wife went to King Solomon Auto Sales on Brickdam to conduct business.
The couple was attempting to cross Brickdam when two men confronted them and robbed Alli of his valuables.
It is alleged that Ali raised an alarm and was shot by the accused. He died shortly after. Police prosecutor Denise Griffith said that Morris was a former member of the Guyana Police Force, and is at present employed as a taxi driver.
Griffith said that knowing that the crime would have been committed makes the defendant liable to be dealt with under the murder/felony rule, which means that they were going to commit a robbery but they never intended to kill the deceased.
In his defence, Morris told the court that he was assisting the police with the investigation and he does not know how the police ended up charging him for the murder.
He said that the police know who had committed the crime. The prosecution also stated that on Friday, May 25, 2007, on Water Street, Morris murdered Ramrattan Singh.
The prosecution said that on that day, Singh went to Guyana Stores to purchase tractor parts. It is alleged that he was about to exit the vehicle when two men robbed him at gunpoint of an undisclosed amount of cash.
Singh allegedly put up a fight and was shot and killed in the process. The matter is to reconvene in court on September 19, 2008.
