After being stuck in Cuba for more than two weeks, some of the 212 Guyanese students have been given the opportunity to return to their homeland.
Vice President of the Guyana-Cuba Friendship Association (GCFA), Zaida Joaquin, has noted that the parents of some of the students have re-booked with the Jim Bacchus Travel Agency in order to fly their children from Cuba to Guyana.
In late July, the parents had made an arrangement with the Jim Bacchus Travel Agency to transport the medical students back to Guyana.
However, a few days before the students were slated to arrive in the country, the agency informed the parents that it would no longer be able to fly the students directly to Guyana, as they only have the capacity to transport them up to Barbados.
All expenses, which amounted to approximately $158,000 were already paid by the parents to the travel agency, and it was noted that to date, the agency did not give an official explanation as to why it did not fly the students directly to Guyana as was previously arranged.
However, some of the parents were still adamant to have their children return to Guyana, since they have been in Cuba for two years, without returning to their homeland.
As such, Kaieteur News understands that some parents have paid additional amounts of close to $80,000 to the same travel agency so that their children could return home.
However, it was also explained that out of the 212 students, only 20 of them would not be able to return, since their parents cannot afford to pay the additional money to the travel agency.
When the issue was raised some two weeks ago, the GFCA had held a meeting with Minister of Public Service, Jennifer Westford, which at the end proved to be fruitless, as it was noted that the ministry could have only assisted the parents if they arranged a chartered flight from Barbados to bring the students to Guyana.
