A total of thirteen items of mail, containing cocaine totaling some 300 grams, and destined for the United States of America, have been intercepted at the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC).
The illicit substance was intercepted yesterday following a joint operation with members of the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU), the Police Narcotics Branch and the GPOC.
According to Surujbans Rao, Intelligence Officer, CANU, the cards were intercepted on two separate occasions.
The first find was made around 09:30 hours while the second one was made around 14:00 hours.
In the initial discovery, a total of 8 envelopes intended for addresses in New York were found to be carrying the substance.
In each envelope there were two sympathy cards each, one original and another photocopied, each laminated with parcels of cocaine.
The cocaine totaled some 200 grams and carries a street value of G$160,000 or US$800.
The second find, according to Rao, bore matching addresses to two of the mail found earlier in the day and cocaine weighing a total of 100 grams, with a street value of G$80,000 (US$400).
Meanwhile, the CANU official said that they are of the opinion that the mail found yesterday is linked to seven postcards which were found at the GPOC sometime last week. Those cards were destined for Holland.
In the meantime, CANU said they are continuing their investigations as they are checking some addresses, most of which have turned out to be false.
Yesterday’s find is the biggest cocaine found in mail at the GPOC for the year.
