An interdicted policeman is among a gang of three men arrested following a high speed chase through a section of Berbice, on Tuesday, after they had committed a daring robbery at Reliance, East Canje.
The men were apprehended at a fuel station near the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam. They had earlier invaded the home of Zeena Doodnath and robbed the household, including overseas-based Guyanese Clifton Bartram, 57, of cash and jewellery.
According to a police press release, at about 20:30 hours, Bartram and his friend Errol Pellew were in the bottom flat of the house ‘taking a drink’ when two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, entered and held them at gunpoint.
They proceeded to beat the two men after their demands for cash and jewellery were not met.
Doodnauth, who was in the upper flat of the house, heard the commotion and decided to investigate, but on her way down she too was held at gunpoint by one of the bandits.
The noise aroused several neighbours who tried to render assistance.
The bandits, sensing that they were about to be challenged, fled with the little loot they managed to take from their victims.
In all the bandits fled with $11,000 cash and a silver chain.
The police were contacted and a patrol responded promptly.
While on their way to the scene, they spotted a known car parked nearby and decided to confront the driver who managed to drive away.
The police gave chase and despite losing the car on two occasions, they managed to locate it at the fuel station.
Three men, including the interdicted policeman, were in the vehicle. They were taken into custody.
The suspects were subsequently placed on an identification parade and were positively picked out by their victims.
They are expected to be charged soon.
