Police yesterday detained a prominent religious figure following allegations that he sexually molested a child aged 22 months.
The religious figure, a priest, was detained after a medical examination of the child revealed that she was sexually tampered with over a period of time.
According to reports reaching this newspaper, the child’s mother lives at the home of the priest, being a family member.
A source told this newspaper that the child’s mother and the priest are the only two adults presently living at the home in the city.
It is alleged that another female relative observed that the child was having some discomfort while she was being cleaned.
The mother was informed and the child was taken to a doctor who confirmed their worst fears.
Suspecting that the religious leader may have been the culprit, the child’s parents reported the matter to the police who immediately detained him.
A source close to the family told this newspaper that the child’s mother had been warned not to leave her child in the man’s care for any reason.
Police confirmed that the suspect was detained but was released on station bail after several hours.
“It is an allegation and we are going to proceed with it (the case) in the best way we know how to deal with such investigations,” a senior police source told this newspaper.
This latest incident comes on the heels of another case of child molestation in which a policeman is accused of sexually molesting his three-year-old son.
In that case, the policeman was detained and statements were obtained from the child’s mother who lives in Sophia. However, no charges have been laid as yet.
Only recently, legislators proposed a bill to make it mandatory for the monitoring of paedophiles.
