DEAR EDITOR,
It is time the residents of Kwakwani start to take action and demand answers from those persons elected to represent them, the Neighbourhood Democratic Councillors (NDC) and those selected Concerned Citizens’ Group (CCG).
For over three years the Kwakwani community is given $100,000 per month to assist with development. This money is a contribution from the bauxite company and is given without any questions asked by the management.
These monies were first passed through the NDC bank account then handed over to the CCG. The money is now given directly to the CCG.
A rough calculation will indicate that over $3.6 million were given to the Kwakwani community to assist with development over the three-year period.
Three years is enough time for any group or organisation representing a community and receiving financial assistance to present a financial statement, especially in a case where there is no evidence of development and it is evident that monies are not spent for its intended purposes.
The residents of Kwakwani should demand that this group and organisation present a financial statement showing all monies received and expenditures for the past three years.
This should be done in the shortest possible time and failure to do this, a petition should be sent to the bauxite company asking that this assistance be withheld until financial statements are produced.
A depressed community like Kwakwani with $100,000 per month for development should be looking far better than it is. Better can and must be done; some persons will remain silent, but all will not.
