Monique’s Caring Hand Support Centre yesterday launched a seminar titled ‘Brother’ at the Georgetown Chambers of Commerce aimed at educating men about the spread of HIV and ways of preventing it.
Executives of the organization, Dawn Stewart and Mr. Gordon Lyken told this newspaper that the main aim of the seminar is to educate men in today’s society about their lifestyles and to motivate them to make wise choices.
The seminar featured open discussions on issues that affect men and the roles they play in society.
Of particular focus was the roles men play in the lives of their families, especially their children, and the importance of learning effective communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal.
‘Brother’ is the first such seminar held to stimulate discussions among males on the roles they play in controlling the spread of STDs and STIs.
The seminar utilizes social cognitive theory and the theory of gender and power, and is designed to be delivered in a community setting.
Stewart stated that Monique’s Caring Hands Support Centre, along with its overseas based counterpart Caribbean People International Collective Inc (CPIC), is committed to fostering the health, well being and cultural diversity of individuals, families, schools and communities.
Ms. Dawn Stewart encouraged the men to spend more time with their families.
She also spoke on issues involving the way men think as it relates to being faithful to their partners and also the way in which they make decisions that would enable them to develop a sense of responsibility.
The male participants offered a challenging rebuttal when they told Stewart that they make choices in an egotistical sense rather than a positive one.
“Faithfulness leads to change in society and our society cannot function without men…it can become disrupted,” Stewart told the men.
She stated that men are perceived by women and children as authoritative and they should pay more attention to their role in making Guyana a better country.
The ‘Brother’ workshop compliments the already existing ‘Sister’ programme where women gather to discuss their roles in society.
The CPIC Inc is a non governmental volunteer organization that was founded in 1994. It operates under the primary mission of promoting the quality of life.
The organization pays emphasis on health, education and the role of the family.
The workshop concludes today.
