– Ticket distribution attracts hundreds
Hundreds of people yesterday braved the scorching heat of the sun as they lined up at the National Cultural Centre, the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, the Sophia Exhibition Centre and the Carifesta X Secretariat to uplift their free tickets for the Opening Ceremony of Carifesta X, geared for the Guyana National Stadium tomorrow night.
At the Carifesta X Secretariat on Middle Street, the lines started within the compound, stretched down Middle Street, and around onto Carmichael Street. Meanwhile, at the National Cultural Centre, the lines which began inside the building stretched a considerable distance down Homestretch Avenue, almost merging with the long lines outside of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Some of those gathered related to this newspaper that they had slept at the venues in the hope of uplifting their tickets early before going about their daily business.
The majority of the ticket hopefuls explained that they had gathered from approximately 07:30 hrs yesterday morning.
“A lot of people gun go away, this thing tekkin a long time,” one frustrated individual noted.
Despite this, scores of persons continued to wait late into the afternoon.
The extended waiting time, however, resulted in disputes between members of the public and the police, who were there to maintain order.
A few reports surfaced of adults stealing tickets from children who had gone to uplift tickets early at the National Cultural Centre.
By lunch time, all of the tickets for the opening and closing ceremonies had been exhausted, and persons were presented with passes to the Grand Markets.
