Brazilian ‘smoke squadron’ to thrill locals with air demonstration
The world renowned Brazilian Air Force’s ‘Smoke Squadron’ will thrill local spectators with a demonstration this Sunday in the vicinity of the Guyana Defence Force Headquarters, Camp Ayanganna.
The demonstration will take place at a time when hundreds of overseas guests will be in Guyana to be part of Carifesta X, which will be launched tomorrow.
The smoke squadron’s demonstration will last for about 30 minutes, during which 55 aerobatic manoeuvres will be performed. According to a brochure, on May 14, 1952, the air demonstration, popularly called the smoke squadron, accomplished its first official exhibition.
Throughout the initial demonstrations, the need to provide the audiences with a better visualization of each manoeuvre became clear.
So in 1953, after a series of experiments an extra oil tank was installed in the planes’ baggage compartment, exclusively for the smoke generation system. Now with more than 3,180 demonstrations performed in Brazil and abroad, the smoke squadron proudly crosses the skies.
The squadron’s first aircraft was the North American T-6 Texan, which had been in the Brazilin Air Force inventory since World War II.
In 1982, the squadron adopted the EMB-312 Tucano trainers as an air show aircraft, designated the T-12 by the Brazilian Air Force.
The highlight of the demonstration will be the upside down flight in formation.
On October 29 last, the squadron broke its own world record whey they flew with 12 aircraft upside down in formation in Pirassununga.
The ‘Smoke Squadron’ is headquartered at Brazilian Air Force Academy, in Pirassununga, in the state of Sao Paulo.
