Cray Wanderers have pulled off a massive coup by signing 26 year old Guyanese International Shawn Beveney for their RymanLeague promotion bid this season.
Beveney, known on the local scene as ‘Bubbly’ a natural midfield player who started his career with Western Tigers, scored on his debut forCray on Saturday last in their 3-2 win over Godalming Town.
He has donned national colors 41 times, scoring on 22 occasions.
Beveney, who has represented Guyana since a junior always displaying a high level of discipline and fitness, was voted man of the match in a recent friendly fixture against Trinidad and Tobago in the Twin Island Republic.
The T&T squad included players the caliber of Premier League stars Carlos Edwards and Kenwyn Jones. ‘Bubbly’ also featured last month on Sky Sports 1 TV programme FIFA FUTBOL MUNDIAL, a programme which focused on Guyana’s rise of 96 places up the FIFA rankings.
Cray Wanderers Chairman Gary Hillman said: “It’s a massive boost and proud moment for the club.” “What I have seen of him the boy looks absolutely awesome, it’s going to be very hard for us to hang on to him this season as he should obviously be playing in The Football League and we have already turned down an offer for him.”
Hillman said after the match on Saturday: “Shawn wants to get noticed and improve his game,” “I know he spoke to various people in football and they advised him that we had the right set-up and coaching team for him to further his career.”
“His advisors Temptation Promotions have seen how players in the past have prospered after playing for Cray, and Shawn feels that we are most suited to put him on the right path to improve his game.”
Sam Wood who played for the Wands first team at age 17 now plays for Brentford, and Jon Main after scoring goals galore for Cray in 2006 was reportedly bought by AFC Wimbledon for £22,000 last season.
Hillman said: “It’s a measure of how far the club has come and a credit to everyone involved when a class player like Shawn Beveney wants to play for us.”
Beveney will be in action again at Hayes Lane on Bank Holiday this Monday when Cray entertains newcomers Merstham in a Ryman League match. Since migrating to England, Beveney has also played for Lewes F.C.
Beveney, who played a major role in Guyana’s rise up the FIFA Rankings as well as this country’s unbeatable run of form in the 2006/7 Digicel Caribbean Cup now known as the Digicel Caribbean Championship (DCC), is expected to feature once again for the Golden Jaguars in the second round of the 3rd edition of the region’s premier tournament after missing Guyana’s Group B matches earlier this month at the Providence Stadium.
Guyana, winners of group ‘B’, advanced to the 2nd round group ‘H’ leg which will be hosted by Trinidad and Tobago from November 1 – 9.
