…police ranks to facilitate uninterrupted progress of traffic – Semple
Traffic lights will be turned off during Carifesta X events and will be directed by traffic ranks who will be at the junctions. This is according to Traffic Chief Neil Semple, when he outlined the plans for the orderly and uninterrupted progression of traffic in and around the capital city.
Semple noted that despite the fact that there will be heavy police presences along the various routes between venues and at key sites, it will not detract from the regular countrywide patrols.
Semple, who will be in command of the traffic arrangements for Carifesta, noted that there will be adequate parking facilities for patrons but barriers and foot patrols will be placed at strategic locations to assist the public. All delegates arriving in the country for the event will be escorted by the police to and from the airports as well as to and from the various venues.
He insists that there will be full route control by the police during the 10 days of Carifesta.
According to the Traffic Chief, the opening and closing ceremonies which are expected to attract huge crowds will see the closure of the eastern carriageway of the East Bank Demerara Highway between Nandy Park and the southern end of the National Stadium.
The western carriageway will be converted temporarily into a two-way carriageway to facilitate north and south bound commuters hence no parking will be allowed along this strip of road.
Vehicles will not be allowed into the main entrance of the stadium and traffic ranks will assist patrons with parking.
The Police will also be issuing advisories in both the electronic and print media to edify the public about the traffic arrangements. Semple also announced there will be similar arrangements at the other main venues such as the Exhibition Centre, the National Park and the National Cultural Centre.
