Come this Sunday, August 24, 2008, the East Coast Highway and Public Road will be set ablaze when Guyana’s leading cyclist’s battle each other for top honours in a specially arranged Carifesta 60-mile cycle road race sponsored by Ocean View International Hotel.
Alonzo Greaves, who won the last road race (Namilco ‘Wheat Up’) would again be fancying his chances of claiming the top spot in this event but will find the going tough with the likes of the improving Tony Simon, Darren Allen, just off a victory in the Seven Seas feature race in the National Park last Saturday, Lear Nunes, Junior Niles, Robin Persaud and Ian Jackson among others in contention.
Among the juniors, the rivalry will be no less intense than the seniors with Christopher Holder, who is also a threat among the seniors, taking on fellow juniors Daniel Ramchurejee and Christopher Persaud.
The veteran category will also be keenly contested with Kennard Lovell, who has gotten the better of his nearest rivals in the recent past aiming to maintain the advantage. Mounting a challenge to Lovell dominance will be Linden Blackman and from the Ancient county, Gary Benjamin. The leading upright riders will be looking to shine as well.
Sunday’s race will pedal off from the Ocean View Hotel at 07:30hrs proceeding to Perseverance Mahaicony before returning to Ocean View for the finish.
Veteran and upright riders will turn back at Belfield Car Park to finish at Ocean View.
Prizes are at stake for the first 6 cyclists to cross the line while the first 3 juniors, veterans and upright to finish will also receive prizes.
Eight prime prizes will be at stake in the race organised by national coach, Hassan Mohamed.
