Regal XI led qualifiers thru to the quarter-finals of the Guyana Softball League, Banks DIH sponsored cricket competition following results of games played last Sunday.
Regal XI of Georgetown outclassed Untouchables XI of Berbice by 7 runs in a skillful display at the Eve Leary Ground on Pitch # 1 to book their place.
Regal XI batted first and were affected by the rain, being forced off on three occasions, but eventually made 124-7 in 15 overs with Mahase Chunilall being pushed up the order to opening the batting, leading the way with 45 which included 2×6’s and 2×4 in a sensible display, rotating the strike expertly.
He was well supported by the other opening batsman Zulfikar Ali with 26 (1×6; 2×4) in an opening partnership of 45 which set the tone for them to achieve their eventual score (124-7 in 15 overs).
The bowling for Untouchables was led by the wily Sanasee Tyrone who spun the ball prodigiously to capture 3-17 from his 3 overs. He was supported by Vidyan Da Silva with 2-23 from his 3 overs.
When Untouchables batted, they were going at the same rate as Regal XI and at one stage were cruising at 89-4 in 11 overs, but when Vicky Persaud, the eventual top scorer with 43(5×6; 2×4)was bowled by Mahase Chunilall, the bating went into a decline.
Persaud was supported by David Looknauth with 14 (2×4) as their team was eventually being bowled out for 117 in 14.5 overs.
Regal XI bowling were led by Eri Sharma who was very economical with 3-13 from 3 overs and supported by Mahase Chunilall in a good all-round performance with 3-22 from 3 overs and Mahendra Arjune with 2-22 from his 3 overs.
In the up coming quarter-final matches: Regal XI will play Den Amstel XI, Rangers XI tackle Trophy Stall XI, Rocky XI play La Jalousie Estate XI and Boom Blast XI challenge Country Side XI for semi-final spots.
Meanwhile, the next tournament will begin this Sunday and will be sponsored by Memorex Enterprises and 14 trophies plus cash incentives are at stake for the winner and runner-up.
This is a countrywide tournament and already a number of teams have signed up: Essequibo – 21 teams; Berbice – 15; Demerara have 42 teams.
This competition will also see teams being selected to represent their county’s in the upcoming inter-county competition which will be played in October.
Persons wishing to represent their county teams will have to play in the Guyana Softball League tournament.
