Two men from the North West District have been refused bail after they reportedly wounded a man and his wife, as well as damaged over $250,000 worth in items.
The duo, Cheddie Dawson and Orlando Albert, made their appearance yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Priya Beharry.
It is alleged that on Sunday, August 17, last, at White Creek in the North West District, they unlawfully and maliciously wounded Roxanne O’Selmo, causing her actual bodily harm.
It is also alleged that on the same day the two men maliciously damaged a quantity of plumbing fittings and other items totaling $256,000, property of Lennox Almond.
A third charge read that on the same day with intent to commit murder the duo maliciously wounded Devon Benjamin. To all three charges the men pleaded not guilty.
Meanwhile, Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews told the court that on the day in question the men went into Benjamin’s camp at White Creek, armed with cutlasses, and attacked him.
The Prosecutor told the court that the men began chopping Almond about the body, resulting in the man sustaining nine incise wounds. According to Matthews, Benjamin’s reputed wife Roxanne O’Selmo was injured after she went to her husband’s rescue.
Matthews added that after the men were fleeing the camp they began chopping the items.
The men were subsequently arrested and charged. As such the prosecutor asked that bail be refused on the grounds of the seriousness of the offence.
The prosecutor further pointed out to the court that following the incident, Almond was air dashed to the city for treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital where his condition is listed as critical.
The Magistrate then ruled in favour of the prosecution. Bail was refused and the two men are expected to make their next court appearance on November 11.
The matter will, however, be heard at the Matthews Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
However, before being escorted out of the court room, one of the accused, Dawson, told the court that he was mercilessly beaten by the police ranks who arrested him.
The accused even showed the bruises which he reportedly sustained during the ordeal.
The Magistrate then asked the accused if he could identify any of the ranks and he responded in the positive, pointing to the rank who escorted him to court.
The rank, however, vehemently denied hitting the accused. The accused was then advised to pen a letter to the Police Complaints Authority.
