Rehearsal is ongoing for Guyana’s signal play ‘Legend of the Silk Cotton Tree,’ written by Barrington Braithwaite and adapted by Al Creighton.
The play is scheduled to be performed at Lichas Hall in Linden and at the National Cultural Centre on August 25 and August 29 respectively.
“Most actors have put down their scripts, and the choreography of a stick fight and dancing is currently being done,” said Dr. Frank Anthony at his weekly press briefing on Friday at the CARIFESTA Secretariat.
The play, which showcases one of Guyana’s legends and folklore of ‘Dutch Jumbie’ and ‘silk cotton trees,’ depicts one family’s experience with the phenomena.
With names like Jennifer Thomas, Sonia Yarde, Godfrey Naughton, Neaz Subhan and Ron Robinson, among others, the play promises to be spellbinding and entertaining. It involves the use of special effects in the form of lighting and sound, as well as live drumming.
Additionally, the cast includes some of the trainees of the recently concluded Technical Theatre Training programme that was conducted by the CARIFESTA Secretariat in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the Inter American Development Bank, and the United Nations Development Programme.
“It is really exciting to be part of this play, particularly because of the fact that Guyana is hosting CARIFESTA X and I’ll be performing at home,” said Jennifer Thomas.
“Additionally, it is also a chance for me to give back to Guyana. Though I have been involved in theatre for almost twenty-five years, it was always personal. This time, it is because of national pride,” Thomas added.
Admitting that she has been deemed one of Guyana’s best, she promises that her performance ‘will bear testimony to that’.
“I do believe that, when viewed, the play will bear witness to the fact that Guyana has skilled and very talented individuals involved in every discipline of theatre arts,” she concluded.
Walking in the footsteps of theatre stalwarts like Mignon Lowe, Desiree Edghill, Margaret Lawrence and Andre Subryan, all of whom ‘mentored her and are responsible for the actress she has become,’ Thomas says that she is ‘especially pleased that some of the recently trained actors are involved in the play.’
“I am excited to be working with people I have helped to train. It feels like motherhood. It’s a fulfilling experience”, said Jennifer, who was one of the trainers of the theatre training acting class. “I feel like I’ve come full circle by giving to them what others have given to me.”
Meanwhile, Rhonda Hamilton, one of the trainees, said that it has been an uplifting experience so far, which has widened her views of acting and directing.
She added: “I count it a privilege to be working with Al Creighton and the other members of the cast”. Hamilton says that she has generally “gained a wealth of knowledge and experience that is priceless.”
